the aviary and the dome
the client has two spacious terraces, on different
levels, which were each treated in a classic but distinct
style. the one on the floor of the living quarters was
divided into three separate areas, each with a particular
function: ornamental plants for the entrance, flowers and
perfumed blooms for the night zone, aromatic plants and fruit
for the kitchen area. the octagonal terrace above is reserved
for the entertaining area, and is on two levels joined by steps
in black stone. here is where we find the large aviary-gazebo
which, like the many elements in iron, has been specially
designed and manufactured. the pavement in handmade terracotta
has an antique appearance, and is enclosed with yellow and black
river pebbles. the nearby dome designed by bramante on the church
of santa maria delle grazie is framed, to great effect by greenery
rather than feeling as if on a terrace, one has the pleasant
feeling of being in a hanging garden.
